Boone, NC - The Horton Hotel
If you’re a North Carolinian, you know about the High Country. At the heart of the High Country is a little mountain town called Boone. I guess you could say Boone, NC has a piece of my heart. I grew up about 40 minutes from this college town. I ended up calling it home for four years, while attending Appalachian State University. I revisit Boone often, and consider it a form of therapy each time. Recently, I discovered a new Boone gem; The Horton Hotel. My stay there was beyond exceptional! I’m going to give you the low down on the BEST of Boone, and I’m starting with my new favorite spot; The Horton.
Boonetown has its rustic mountain charm, but walking into The Horton Hotel you’ve been transported to a luxurious mountain escape! The Horton’s lobby is truly picture perfect. Get your Instagram face on, because you’re going to want a picture on that purple sofa!
After you have checked in at The Horton, go grab a coffee right around the corner at Espresso News. Get your cup of joe to go, and bring it back to enjoy the cozy fireplace. The Horton Hotel is in the most convienent spot to get your shopping, eating, and drinking on. It’s located on Boone’s famous King Street. Below, I’m sharing my must visit spots!
BOONE SHOPPING
Mast General Store // Always my first stop when in Boonetown, as the locals call it! From classic candies, to great outdoor clothing and goods, I always end up making a purchase in the Mast General Store. This location is the King Street store.
Lucky Penny // I’m always scouting the area for the cutest boutique. Lucky Penny is the one I pop in everytime I’m in town, because their clothes are always on point!
The Shoppes at Farmers // This store has it all. If I’m in need of a unique gift, this is where I go! So many custom finds in here for the artsy person in your life!
Boone Belles // I love how affordable everything in this boutique is. Perfect place to pick up a cute pair of earrings for you or your girlfriends!
Watsonatta Western World // I can’t leave my favorite cowboy boot shop off this list! I always have to step foot in this store, if nothing else, for the leather scent.
Original Mast General Store // When you have exhausted all the cute shops on King Street, hop in the car and drive 10 minutes outside of town to the Original Mast General Store. Being at this store makes you feel like you have traveled back in time. Make sure and purchase a glass bottle coke, and take a moment to breathe in that fresh mountain air!
HORTON HOTEL ROOFTOP BAR & LOUNGE
Rooftop Lounge & Bar // A perk of being a hotel guest during the weekdays, allows you private access to The Horton’s rooftop lounge. Simply bring your own bottle if staying Monday - Wednesday, the bar will be closed. Don’t fret, the hotel will provide all the essentials for you to create the perfect happy hour. In addition to the stunning 360 degree mountain views, there’s a fire pit and cozy blankets to wrap up in! If you’re not a guest of the hotel you can still check out The Horton’s Rooftop Bar Thursday - Sunday.
HOTEL AMENITIES
If you’ve ever craved a goodnight’s rest, then stay at The Horton! From luxurious robes, to a white noise machine, and even an aromatherapy diffuser, you’re bound to get the best sleep ever. Did I mention they will even bring you coffee in bed?!?
Once you’ve awakened from your deep sleep, head downstairs for The Horton’s complimentary artisan breakfast. Hand’s down the best hotel breakfast I’ve ever had! Don’t forget to check out The Horton’s gift shoppe in the lobby. You’re going to want a memento from their locally crafted goods!
BOONE EATS
Melanie’s // When you’re ready to grab lunch, there’s two King Street spots I love. The first is Melanie’s, with their fresh farm - to - table food. Also, a great breakfast option!
Our Daily Bread // This is my second favorite lunch spot because it’s simply so cozy! They serve up some amazing comfort food too. Plan to take your coat off and stay awhile at this lunch spot.
Vidalia // Hands down, this is my top pick for dinner! It’s within walking distance of the hotel, and the food never disappoints! This is gourmet southern cuisine, but with a casual dining experience.
Lost Province // It’s my trademark to give ya’ll a beer and pizza joint. Lost Province is a family run brewery serving up great craft beer and wood fire pizzas. Also, within walking distance of The Horton.
BOONE ACTIVITIES
Boone may be small in size, but it has so much to offer. If you’re an outdoor lover then the High Country is definitely for you. Below, I’m sharing a few fun places/things to do that you need to check off your High Country must do list!
Blue Ridge Parkway // Hop in the car and start traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway. There’s many overlooks to pull over and gaze at our beautiful mountains. You get extra points for packing a thermos full of hot cocoa, and a blanket for a winters day picnic. I suggest doing this on your way into or out of town!
Appalachian State University // Boonetown is known for being a college town. As a graduate, I can honestly say it’s worth it to walk around campus and see the university grounds!
Town of Blowing Rock // A short 15 minute drive and you’re in another quaint town. There’s great restaurants and boutiques that line Blowing Rock’s Main Street.
Tanger Outlets // If you need more shopping, then hit up the Tanger Outlets on your way to Blowing Rock. {Click here} - for a complete list of stores at this location.
Appalchain Ski Mtn. // If you’re looking to hit the slopes on your winter retreat, look no further than Appalachian Ski Mtn. Sometime’s when the hubs and I are in town we order a couple of beers at the lodge, and watch the skiers come down the mountain.
For myself, there’s no better getaway than a cozy mountain vacation. I loved that The Horton Hotel provides all the luxurious amenities of a high-end hotel, but you still get that small-town feel during your stay. If you haven’t experienced the High Country in all its glory during the winter months, you are truly missing out. I hope my guide for a winter getaway in adorable Boone, inspires you to pack up your sweaters and snow boots, and hit the road!
